Women In Travel Hacking

This is a story about the time I flew across the country to meet a bunch of internet strangers.

Travel hacking, points and miles, award travel…whatever you want to call it, it’s been a historically male-dominated game. I’ve been in this space since 2015, but it’s only in the last couple of years that I’ve seen more and more women focused on points and miles popping up.

Many of us knew of each other through Instagram, but only some of us had ever met in real life. Well, one conversation turned into an Instagram DM thread which quickly turned into a weekend in San Diego! You can move fast when everyone can book flights and hotels with points without worrying about the cost too much.

Points and Miles Made It Happen

How does a group of travel hacking women choose a destination, you ask? By the hotel free night certificates burning a hole in their pockets along with an elite night credit promotion, of course!

A few of us had Hyatt category 1-4 free night certificates available and during the weekend we chose to travel, there was a promotion offering double elite night credits at Andaz locations. So, we ended up choosing Andaz San Diego since it satisfied both the free night certificate holders and those of us chasing elite status.

A Weekend in San Diego

I’ll admit I was a little nervous flying across the country to meet a bunch of women I only knew from Instagram, but I was equally excited.

My fear was squashed immediately as soon as I started meeting people. It’s a strange thing meeting your internet friends — you kind of feel like you know them even though you’ve never actually met.

Travel Hacking Women: (L-R). Alex and Pam from Travel Hacking Mom, Katie from Katie’s Travel Tricks, Jess from Made Possible By Points, and me!

The weekend was filled with lots of points and miles talk, trip plans, and blogging advice. It was a very supportive and collaborative atmosphere. Everyone shared their expertise and ideas for future projects…some new collaboration ideas may have even been born.

It may sound super cheesy, but being around these women made me feel awesome — like I was part of a group of women that shared interests and cared about each other’s success.

It’s great when women can support other women. I love the saying “dimming someone else’s light doesn’t make yours any brighter”. It’s true that the more we share and support each other the more successful we all become!

Here’s a list of everyone in attendance at our ‘Women In Travel Hacking” meet-up. I hope you’ll find these women on Instagram or through their websites. See who resonates with you and give them a follow and share their posts. It’s a great and free way to support women business owners.

This list is by no means complete — there are plenty of other travel hacking women out there. Go find these women on Instagram and you’ll quickly come across plenty of other women travel hackers ready to share their knowledge and talk points all day long.

Final Thoughts

Little did I think when I started this blog back in 2016 that it would lead to so many incredible things. In addition to launching me down an entirely new and exciting career path, I have met some great friends along the way.

The travel hacking community has long been dominated by a bunch of bros. While most of these men are very helpful and supportive and I’ve got nothing against them, there’s something special about finding a community of women who have the same obsession interests.
